Dear Czech community, with https://download.geofabrik.de/europe/czech-republic-latest.osm.pbf soon reaching 1 GB, it becomes time for me to create sub-regions for your country on the Geofabrik download server. I see that you have mapped these regions in OSM on admin level 3: Střední Čechy Severovýchod Praha Jihozápad Jihovýchod Severozápad Moravskoslezsko Střední Morava And you have mapped the kraje on admin level 4: Královéhradecký kraj Olomoucký kraj Liberecký kraj Ústecký kraj Plzeňský kraj Středočeský kraj Kraj Vysočina Praha Jihočeský kraj Pardubický kraj Jihomoravský kraj Karlovarský kraj Moravskoslezský kraj Zlínský kraj I understand that the adminlevel3 regions are just statistical regions that have little administrative relevance, and the adminlevel4 regions are the "true" regions. My question to you is, which would be more useful to have? I would prefer to use the adminlevel3 regions because there are fewer of them. But are these regions actually well known - would someone who lives in, say, Olomouc, immediately know that they are in the Střední Morava region, or are these regions so obscure and unimporant that it would be better to use the kraje for splitting? Bye Frederik

Hello Frederik. I think a resolute answer to this question is to divide it by ?kraje? that is admin level 4, because everyone knows what they are, unlike with the admin level 3 regions. In my opinion it is also going to be helpful to be able to download data based on these level 4 regions. With wishes of a calm mind and good health, Ondřej Lopatka ondrejlopatka.cz

Hello, First, thank you for the extracts, they're immensely helpful! The admin_level=3 are obscure to most people, except for those who need to work with NUTS classifications. If you're interested in recognizable region names, then kraje (admin_level=4) are preferable. However, since we're discussing planet extracts (and Czech NUTS 2 regions decompose cleanly into NUTS 3), I don't think it matters much, beyond the familiarity: people looking for extracts would be likely to be familiar with the classification. Caveat: in both cases, CZ02 and CZ020 are annular, with CZ01/CZ010 in the middle. I would suggest serving CZ02+CZ01 in a single extract. Best regards, Jan @Piskvor Martinec

Completely agreed, I don't think that people that are using this tool would be unfamiliar with Cohesion Regions (admin_level=3). Either way, I too think that separating Prague from Central Bohemia is a good idea, I would support too serving CZ02 +CZ01 as a single extract, with the rest being either Cohesion Regions or Regions, doesn't matter either way. Sincerely, Franta

Correction (sorrry): I missed the "Don't" part. Basically my message is that we should merge Central Bohemia and Prague, and I don't really have that strong of an opinion regarding the rest. Franta

Hello Frederick, as noted before, level 4 (kraj) would be more natural division for most people. Another question - would you add subregions to the whole country or will there be only these regions available and not a CZ as a whole country. If it will be replacement, will there be some period with both to be generated for fluent switch of dependent tools/workflows etc? Thanks a lot tom.k

Hi, thank you all for the feedback. Based on what you have said, I will use the kraje for splitting even though it's a little more work. With regards to Praha, I think I'll use the same approach that I have used for Germany's Brandenburg area which surrounds Berlin like a donut: https://download.geofabrik.de/europe/germany.html - there's Brandenburg-with-Berlin and Berlin on its own, but no Brandenburg-with-a-hole.
Another question - would you add subregions to the whole country or will there be only these regions available and not a CZ as a whole country.
The .osm.pbf downloads will be available for both the whole country and also for the sub regions, but the shape/geopackage files will stop being made for the whole country, and will only be created for the sub regions. If anyone has some sort of toolchain that is based on the shape or geopackage files, they would have to modify that. Is that a issue for anyone? Bye Frederik

Hi Frederik and what about updates (*.osc.gz)? Updates will be available for whole CZ or for sub-regions only? Thank you for your hard work!
  9. Frederik Ramm frederik na remote.org #mbd24ac
    Hi,
and what about updates (*.osc.gz)? Updates will be available for whole CZ or for sub-regions only?
Updates will continue to be available without interruption for the whole country, and for the kraje they will start at number 1. Bye Frederik

Hi, I have now set this up as discussed: https://download.geofabrik.de/europe/czech-republic.html Let me know if something looks odd. -- It will take a few days for the regional taginfo to catch up but once it does you will be able to see per-kraj taginfo statistics on pages like https://taginfo.geofabrik.de/europe:czech-republic:karlovarsky/ Bye Frederik
